BWCFC, Zipcar Challenge, Club Sports Night, and Team Sweatpants

BWCFC is November 13th! Don't forget that you are responsible for your own whites, socks, and mask. You can borrow mask and whites, but ONLY if you let Landon know (his email is in the recent engarde@gwu.edu email sent out). If you would like to order your own equipment, let Rebecca know by this Saturday at noon with cash.

We don't have enough equipment for everyone to borrow everything. Your squad leaders will have definite lists by Tuesday, November 8th. But if you can  - and you really need to - get your own underarm guard and BP (women only).

The Zipcar challenge will be after BWCFC (November 13th), but we really need more volunteers! Email Rebecca if you'd like to help out. We need more people to win the $3700 prize, given every month.

Club Sports Night is November 16th (check your facebook for the event). Our team can win zipcar time (which saves us a lot of money), shirts, money, and more! Attendance is free with your GWorld.

Sweatpants are ready to be ordered! They are underarmor weatherproof sweatpants (very nice) with our logo on the left pocket (don't worry, George is facing out). If you want one, let Rebecca know by November 18th. Since this is a team fundraiser and the money made goes to helping us out for tournaments and such, the sweatpants are $65. Family members can buy them for you as well, so you can ask for the sweatpants for your holiday celebration.

Check your email for news about a possible Team Adventure!

Chaos Changes, Gear, and Bake Sale

CHAOS
Men's and Women's epee and sabre - car
Women's foil - metro with joel, with a car ride outside the UMCP metro station

No need to worry - everyone still gets breakfast! If you need to leave early, email Rebecca. If not, everyone should stay to help breakdown and transport equipment.

If you need to get equipment, you must get it tomorrow (Saturday) since HellWell is closed on Sunday. You are responsible for your whites, socks, and mask.

If Rebecca is getting your equipment for you, you must come get it from her BEFORE Sunday morning because it's too heavy for her carry alone.

BAKE SALE
We always need more volunteers! Whether you want to work at the bake sale or bake something (or make someone bake for you), anything would be appreciated. If you'd like to volunteer, email Joel. Those who are volunteering (thanks, guys!), please meet at 10:15 am outside the Foggy Bottom metro to go with Joel.

Chaos and Bale Sale

Chaos is this Sunday! If you're going, meet outside of Hellwell at 7 am. The team leaves at 7:15 sharp. Don't forget to bring your white (jacket, underarm guard, knickers, socks, shoes) and mask. If you paid dues and don't have socks, email Rebecca to let her know.

Ready for another successful bake sale? The next one will be this Saturday, from 11 am to 2 pm. We still need people to run the table, help set up, and bake some food. Email Joel! For his email address, check Rebecca's recent email.

Obama + Lightsaber + Fencing

Need more encouragement to love fencing? Just look at these pictures! In an effort to get support for the 2016 Summer Olympics bid for Chicago, USA, Obama had Olympic silver medalist Tim Morehouse do a fencing demonstration on the White House lawn in 2009. Check out the awesome pictures - Obama directing a bout, then fencing with a lightsaber!

Want some new gear? Now's the time to order it!

We will do another gear order by October 14th. If you want to order something, get your money and order in full by 2 pm on October 14th (though the sooner, the better). Email or text Rebecca to set up a time to give her the record. Thanks!

New to fencing tournaments? Want to brush up on what to bring to a tournament?

Taylor from the foil squad was nice enough to write a list of tournament suggestions!

  1. Knee length socks (You MUST wear knee high socks whenever you are fencing in a competitive setting, the socks will go under your knickers, and must cover all of your skin - some directors are VERY particular about this)

  2. Good sneakers - you’ll be fencing a lot more than you do in a typical practice and your feet and knees will get sore if you don’t have good supportive shoes. And something with good traction is important, seeing as gym floors get covered with grime very quickly, you’ll want as much traction as possible.

  3. shorts and t-shirt to wear under your knickers - they are white. And whatever floats your boat, but I’m not partial to hundreds of people seeing my undergarments through my knickers... Girls, I recommend either spandex, just because it doesn’t get all bunchy under your knicker, and is more comfortable at least for me. But soffee shorts work just perfectly too. Guys.... ask another guy. Sorry, but seeing as I’m not one, I’m not much help :)

  4. deodorant (...seriously, please, that should be self explanatory [for life in general], but just in case... )

  5. food or money for food (you will get hungry, really hungry. and you will want food, lots and lots of food. My suggestions are fruit snacks, pretzels, granola bars and trail mix, or anything like that. Stuff that you can eat in small bites, has some protein and carbs and is NOT TO HEAVY, which you will really regret as soon as you get back on the strip, I promise.

  6. WATER/Gatorade - SOOOOO important! I love you all and don’t want anyone fainting from dehydration. It happened once on my high school team and its scary stuff, and makes Taylor sad. Staying hydrated is THE most important thing. Yes, you can buy water at the tournament most of time, but I don’t know about ya’ll, but I don’t like paying $5 for a bottle of water when I have a brita filter in my fridge... Soooo, I HIGHLY recommend bringing a large re-fillable water bottle with you.

  7. A book/cards etc.. - there is often a lot of down time at tournaments, and I HIGHLY suggest not bringing anything TOO VALUABLE, as things have a tendency to “grow legs” at fencing tournaments... I’ve had spandex stolen before. 1. gross. 2. if people steal SPANDEX imagine how nice iPad’s and stuff like that looks...

  8. Bring an ipod and...

  9. Make a pump up mix! seriously, I have a “fencing music” playlist, which I listen to on repeat for hours before I fence, and it really helps me get in the zone!

  10. SLEEP! Seriously, sleep the night before. Sleep a lot more than you usually would. I know tournaments are often on sundays. I know we’re in college and no one actually goes to bed early on saturdays, but do your best, Don’t get crazy. You can do that on friday ;) bottom line, the better rested you are the better your body can function, and the better you’ll fence.

YAY FENCING TOURNAMENTS!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOO!!!!!
SO MUCH FENCING LOVE <3 <3 <3

Bake Sale Results

"Hey Everyone!

Great Job on the bakesale! We made 228$ in total. I will be speaking with Jo and find out who still needs to be reimbursed. I will try to reimburse everyone who has spent over 30$ on the trip to nationals.

There seems to be a consensus that a majority of people do not want/will not be here for practice on sunday, so there will be NO practice sunday. If this is incorrect please let me know.

Thanks for a great year! See you all in august

More Info on Bake Sale

"Everyone!

So the bake sale rain day is this thursday from 10-2. Most of the baked goods will be fine, however if you would like to donate something because baking relieves finals stress - it is very welcome :). It will be outside the FOGGY BOTTOM METRO STATION. So far the following people have volunteered:

Ali - 10-12
Claire - 12-2
Coleen - 11-1

It would be best if there was always at least two people were there. If you can just come for an hour that would be great. Please email me as I will not be there if you will be contributing. I will be there for set up and take down and would appreciate the help with moving things from my apartment and back. So far Ron and Ali believe they can help me bring everything to the metro, please confirm! One other person would be best - preferrably someone who can also work from 10-11 as well as one person to help me carry the table back.

Thanks Everybody!
-Rebecca"

Bake Sale Rain Date

"Hey everybody,

thanks for the valiant effort today but we got rained out. :( We still have lots to sell so we will be doing a rain date on this thursday the 5th of May. I will be there to set up and take down and will need someone who can help me take everything from my house to the FOGGY BOTTOM METRO -that is the location. I will not be able to be there, so someone else will be in charge during the sale, and someone will probably have to help me take everything back to my place. If we can get people to do one hour shifts that would be best so we dont sacrifice too much from our finals. We made 53$ in an hour and a half at Eastern Market - good job!

So email me when you can work that thursday and if you cannot please also let me know.

Thank you
-Rebecca"

SAC Northern Conference

"Ok REALLY BIG DEAL!

So Bruce, who is in charge of USACFC and Nats was so impressed with the growth of our team that we have been invited to the SAC Northern Conference meet on Sunday October 2nd next fall. This is huge for us. This is an event set up like Nats with full, separate gender squads. We will be fencing against:

Florida
Navy

SUNY

We got invited to this event due to the incredible commitment of everyone on the team this year and we hope to keep the momentum up for next year. So all you not graduating people mark your calendar and get PUMPED!!!

Congrats guys! Getting invited to this is a big step for us as a team!

For those who would like to get reimbursed for their money from Nationals (and for those who would like to raise money for the team and generally be good people), here's Rebecca's email about the bake sale:

"Hey team,

While some lovely people have offered to bake, we don't not have enough people to work the table and really need some more people to bake. Please email or text me so I know what you can contribute - if you tell me in person I won't remember.

Thanks
-Rebecca"

Update of End of the Year Dinner

An update from Jo about the end of the year dinner/get-together:

"At Pollaidh's Place (Ivory Tower) on Friday, April 29th at 8:30pm. We will serving dinner and supplying some drinks, but if people could make donations that would eally help. We will be giving out awards, gag gifts and making general merriment. Please RSVP so we know how much of everything we need. I know no one has a Saturday exam so no excuses!!!"

Practices

From Jo:

"We will continue to have regular practices until Sunday, May 8th. That will be our final practice for the semester. We will be playing fencing risk and doing other fun activities.

Thank you to everyone for a great job this weekend!!"

End of the Year Dinner

From Jo:

"We are starting a new tradition this year. I am personally very proud and amazed with how the team grew and prospered this year and thus I want to an end of the year dinner/ party. It will consist of food, drinks, merriment, bonding and team awards.

It will be held on Friday April 29th at a TBA location and time. If we have serious problems with the date let me know ASAP.

We will giving out three awards:
MVP- A fencer who has shown dedication, leadership and skill
The Spirit Bear- A fencer who has shown dedication, enthusiasm and excitement in supporting the team
Most Improved- A First Year fencer who has grown and developed his or her skills considerably

GAG GIFTS:
I am putting underclassmen in charge of gag gifts. These are joking (not mean) awards for your team mates. Not everyone needs to receive a gag gift and I would like the underclassmen to work together/ in small groups to figure this out. Gag gifts can go to anyone on the team, but try and keep them a surprise for that person."

Reminder About Indivs

From Jo:

"I need to let Wayne know by 4pm tomorrow who is attending Indivs at Bryn Mawr next Sat. Right now I believe Dave, Katt, Matt, and Jim were all interested. Please send me a confirmation email. Anyone else please let me know. I am paying for the event, you just need to pay for transport (Zipcar)."

Reimbursement

From Jo:

"For anyone who paid for expenses on this trip, we do not have enough in the account to reimburse everyone. So the plan is for right now seniors are getting reimbursed first. Everyone else who paid OVER 30 dollars will be reimbursed next fall with club funds. I went through the majority of the receipts that I have and it seems everyone was wonderful about pitching in and paying for something. As I said before the event things like gas money and food would need to be paid for my team members in lieu of a travel charge. Thus anyone who spent more than 30 dollars will be reimbursed the difference, but for some people it may be marked and returned in the fall.

If you are a senior and I do not have your receipts I need them by tomorrow night as EAFs are due by Friday at the latest. For all non seniors get me your receipts and I will see what them team can do. "

Update on Indivs

"Hi everyone,

So Wayne has let me know that no matter what we have to pay for Indivs and sent at least one person to the event. As a result the club will pay for the Tournament but that means that we will not have cash for nationals and all gas money, etc will have to be paid for through the 250 or so we have left in our SA budget.

That means that anyone who wants to go can, the club will pay the admission fee. However you still need to arrange your own transport to and from Bryn Mawr. It is about a 2 hr drive and zipcars aren't expensive.

IF YOU STILL OR NOW WANT TO GO LET ME KNOW ASAP. I have to send at least one person but since we are paying for 12, 12 of you should go. The event is Sat, April 16th.

Thanks,

Jo"

Indivs

"Hi everyone

As of right now I only have about three people signed up for Indivs on April 16th. That means that unless those people want to pay themselves the $250 entry fee, we either need more fencers or we will not be attending this year. PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP if you want to attend. If you think about it it would be about 22 dollars to get in and maybe another 20 or so for zip car or if people want to loan cars. For students not able to attend Nats this is a great practice opportunity for you. If anyone else is interested let me know by Monday please.

Thanks guys and I am sorry about the restrictions on the event.

Jo"

Bake Sale Results

"Hi everyone,

I am EXTREMELY proud to say we raised 260 dollars today at the bake sale! That is incredible! That should cover a good deal of our gas expenses. Thank you to everyone who baked and worked! You did a wonderful job!

Jo"

Bryn Mar College Fencing Championships (Indivs)

"Hi everyone,

So due to our high costs this year with Nationals and the restrictions on Indivs, here is how the event will work. There will be four fencer's per weapon. Priority goes to any senior who would like to attend. Then all other spaces will be filled on a first come first serve basis. You must have competed in either the Fall or Spring BWCFC Team event.

The club will NOT be paying for the event, which is 250 dollars. Thus the cost will be divided between the 12 people who choose to attend, about 22 dollars each. Those attending are also responsible to arranging their own transport to and from Bryn Mawr. I will be providing our $50 conference dues from Team money, but that is it. All other expenses are on the fencers.

Please let me know ASAP if you would like to attend as I need to send them our roster in like 2 days.

Sorry for this format. I am extremely disappointed with how the event is being run this year.

Thanks,
Jo"
