Announcements
Great news!
1. Fencing practice will start this Friday. It will be between 4pm and 6pm on the 3rd floor basketball court of Helwell. See you there!
2. Some members of the fencing team, including our team president Taylor, will be at the Student Org fair tomorrow, August 27. Stop by to say hi and sign up if you're not on the team yet! If you're already part of the team, come keep Taylor company and recruit some new members!
3. Our most likely first tournament of the year, Chaos, is going to be at University of Maryland College Park on October 20th. Chaos is a tournament geared towards beginner fencers; however, it is also on Parents Weekend. Taylor encourages everyone to talk to your parents now (if they're coming) to try to work out your schedule to see if you can or cannot go to Chaos so that Taylor can know as soon as possible. The tournament is not mandatory or a "team" competition, so you will be competing individually if you choose to go. Taylor and hopefully the blade captains will be there.
Good luck on the first week of classes!

Important Fundraising Opportunity from Landon!
The Verizon Center is giving us a fantastic fundraising opportunity. We receive, as commission, the greater of the following:
(1) 8% of revenue gained from each register we staff, before taxes (average revenue is $8000.00 per event, so we get about $640.00);
(2) $60 per volunteer
I expect that, with 10 volunteers, working one event will give us at least $600.00. With 20 volunteers, we could earn at least $1200.00. As such, these events are crucial. We can't afford to miss out.
Because these fundraisers give so much dough, anyone who participates in these fundraisers will get two fundraising credits (as if you had attended two bake sales). Attending two of these events will give you three credits (five total). So doing two of these Verizon Center events will cover Nationals and another tournament for you. A third will cover three tournaments.
However, there are a number of requirements placed on us. Most important, all of our participants must sign a contract, and attend an orientation on Monday, February 20, from 6-8PM. This is mandatory for those who plan on doing Verizon Center events. The location is 'Dewar's' - apparently a place in the Verizon Center off of F Street and 6th Street.
Important: You cannot be late to the orientation, or these events. Otherwise, the team gets fined, which defeats the purpose of fundraising. 8] So, if you cancel without telling someone, you won't be able to go to the tournament you planned on attending.

Chaos Changes, Gear, and Bake Sale
CHAOS
Men's and Women's epee and sabre - car
Women's foil - metro with joel, with a car ride outside the UMCP metro station
No need to worry - everyone still gets breakfast! If you need to leave early, email Rebecca. If not, everyone should stay to help breakdown and transport equipment.
If you need to get equipment, you must get it tomorrow (Saturday) since HellWell is closed on Sunday. You are responsible for your whites, socks, and mask.
If Rebecca is getting your equipment for you, you must come get it from her BEFORE Sunday morning because it's too heavy for her carry alone.
BAKE SALE
We always need more volunteers! Whether you want to work at the bake sale or bake something (or make someone bake for you), anything would be appreciated. If you'd like to volunteer, email Joel. Those who are volunteering (thanks, guys!), please meet at 10:15 am outside the Foggy Bottom metro to go with Joel.

Chaos and Bale Sale
Chaos is this Sunday! If you're going, meet outside of Hellwell at 7 am. The team leaves at 7:15 sharp. Don't forget to bring your white (jacket, underarm guard, knickers, socks, shoes) and mask. If you paid dues and don't have socks, email Rebecca to let her know.
Ready for another successful bake sale? The next one will be this Saturday, from 11 am to 2 pm. We still need people to run the table, help set up, and bake some food. Email Joel! For his email address, check Rebecca's recent email.
